Protecting tenancy deposits in Scotland
Many students, young people and families renting homes in Scotland’s private sector experience problems in receiving their deposit back from their landlord at
the end of the tenancy. Often disputes occur over damage and deductions from the tenant’s deposit or in some cases tenants receive none of their deposit back. While many deductions are justified, tenants and landlords often feel unfairly treated and with little recourse for action.
In England and Wales, and in many other countries around the world, Tenancy Deposit Protection Schemes exist to ensure only fair deductions are made from deposits and to resolve disputes between landlord and tenant regarding deposits.
I believe Scotland should have a tenancy deposit protection scheme of its own. I have been campaigning on this issue in the Scottish Parliament and have met with many student, young people and homeless groups and charities that back the idea and will continue to push the Scottish Government on this issue.
