Students leaders and opposition parties unite to give 'wakeup call' to Scottish Government

Students in Scotland are at a huge disadvantage to their counterparts from elsewhere in the UK. The maximum available to the poorest student in Scotland is £4510 per year compared to £6200 for an English student. This is unacceptable.

The student support system in Scotland is no longer fit for purpose and it is leading Students campaigning with Claire for a minimum incometo unacceptable amounts of student hardship, with universities' and colleges' funds stretched to breaking point.

A £7000 minimum income for the poorest students would tackle student hardship and bring Scottish students up to a higher level of support than the rest of the UK. This would reach the amount called for by NUS, other student leaders and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

This is achievable, affordable and fair.
